Tavis Smiley was on the Tom Joyner Morning Show giving his normal commentary when he offered a challenge to Black America about Barack Obama. Now because I am biased on this subject I am not going to say anything just yet. I want you guys to take a listen for yourself and tell me what you think.

Click here to listen to the audio from 1-08-08 and then listen to his response on 1-10-08 to the response he received about his remarks.

  1. Hold all Leaders accountable. Research; Read; and pay attention to what the candidates are saying about the issues. Don't get caught up in the hype. I have to agree with Tavis, don't vote for someone just because they are Black or just because they are female. Vote for the person who you can truly say in the words of Janet Jackson; "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" And in the words of TheEducator; "What Are You Going To Do For Me In The Future?"

  2. Now that I've listened to both commentaries, I realize this was the message Tavis was trying to convey, the only problem perhaps was his delivery. He only challenged our infatuation with Mr. Obama, but failed to also address black americas longstanding infatuation with the Clintons with his original commentary. I think that's were the backlash came from, it came off very one sided, just towards Obama.

  3. I completely agree with TheDiva. I understand what he was trying to say, but that is not how it came off. He could have challenged us to become more informed voters without singling out Obama especially right before the South Carolina primary when our vote is most critical. I glad he came back and clarified his initial statements, but sometimes the damage is already done.

  4. I am so SICK of this Black Agenda thing he's talking about!!! I'm Black, I don't have a Black Dream....I have an AMERICAN DREAM!!!

Barack Obama symbolizes to me the American Dream!!!

If all Barack Obama talked about was the Black Agenda, he wouldn't have made it this far. We need to WAKE UP!!! Its not just about US anymore!! Barack Obama has the capability to bring people together of ALL backgrounds and that makes this man POWERFUL!! Where I live in Cali, I see people from Asia, India, Pakistan, Middle Eastern Countries and so on who are in support of this man.

People of color especially need to get over themselves and learn to work TOGETHER. If we do this, we could RUN THIS COUNTRY!!

To end I just want to say how disappointed I am in Tavis Smiley. He has lost all credibility with me. He sounds a little jealous of Barack Obama. And to go on the air with a message like that to MILLIONS of people was wrong. Who does he think he is?

  5. Is it me, or does anyone else get the feeling that Tavis Smiley has emerged as a Judas. I for one enjoy a good debate and commentary which sparks critical thinking, but how on earth can Barack Obama at this juncture in the race for the presidency rearrange his schedule to address a forum specifically for any one race, gender or creed? Idiot the man is running for president of the United States of America that means all people. Barack Obama has said over and over again we as a people cannot and will not forget the past but most importantly we must look to the future. His entire champagne is built on the message of CHANGE you retard.

While we are at it, you need to LEARN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE...YOU HAVE BECOME AN EMBARRASSMENT TO OUR RACE WITH THIS CONSTANT GHETTO LINGO...YOU DON'T SPEAK FOR ME OR PEOPLE LIKE ME...GO AND LEARN HOW TO SPEAK PROPERLY...THAT EBONICS GARBAGE DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU AS BLACK... WITH ONE FAIL SWOOP YOU ARE DISTROYING ALL THE GOOD THAT YOU HAVE DONE. Listen UP Judas (Tavis Smiley) since you have made it profoundly clear that no one but YOU speak for YOU. Then you need to stop speaking for BLACK PEOPLE.

Your arrogance is obnoxious and your behavior and words towards Barack Obama, as well as his wife Michelle Obama emanates ENVY…is that it (Judas) Tavis Smiley? Are you in fact ENVIOUS because of Barack’s accomplishments and popularity in such a short time? I do not think you should have the audacity to speak on black on black crime or tyranny any more.

News flash (Judas) Tavis Smiley people revere Barack Obama that is something you will never experience. He inspires hope, economically, financially and socially to all people not just black people. He understands that in order to help black people we must all work together for the better good of all people in America. Go back to the archives and listen to some of Dr. Martin Luther King’s speeches. I am sorry but my grandmother use to always say you never know how envy breaths. Your commentaries no longer speak for black people nor does it triger critical thinking it now incites RAGE toward presumptuous, narrow minded, self serving people such as your self.

  6. I am disappointed at Tavis Smiley.
Commentary should be used in a positive way not negative. How can this divison that Tavis is promoting be a positive message for our youths especially at the eve of the STATE of the BLACK UNION.
Tavis makes it sound like Barack Obama owes him something---this is wrong. It's the very thing Barack Obama should not be involved. Barack Obama wants to serve all people in his quest for the White House.
Tavis, if Barack Obama did hurt your feelings in his decline to speak at the STATE of the BLACK UNION, turn the other cheek and forgive. This is what Jesus would want you to do and stop sending negative messages out to the Black community against Barack Obama. It's only making you look whiney.
    Love,
    Born Again Christian

  7. Brother Tavis needs to get over himself. His State of Black America forum has never been more than a talk-fest featuring a bunch of folk who, in large part, are struggling for relevance in the national discourse on race and related issues. What has been the result of these years of community gatherings? Oh yeah, book sales for Tavis.

Part of me is sorely disappointed that Tavis would choose to vent his frustrations the way he did. At some point he needs to realize that his State of Black America "event" is not the most important thing happening in the month of February. I'd rather see Sen. Obama on the campaign trail working for every vote. Tavis ought to be savvy enough to understand that nothing trumps being out in the streets and pumping flesh during campaign season.

Tavis, you owe us an apology. When I say "us", I mean those of us who ARE free-thinking and future-focused. If you're going to castigate Sen. Obama for not making your little meeting a priority, then why not castigate Sen. Clinton for virtually disengaging herself from the Black community during this campaign season? If you're going to rake Sen. Obama across the coals, then why not rake Sen. Clinton across the coals for her voting record--or even the legacy of her husband? Remember the fact that she made the public statement that she'd never support equalization of crack and powder cocaine sentencing? Remember that NAFTA and welfare reform came under her purview of experience as first lady. Just because she's showing up to your event doesn't make her more committed to the issues facing Black folk.

And I won't even get into trying to figure out who the hell appointed you the mouthpiece for Black America...
