Roland Martin wrote a wonderful commentary about whether or not Sen. Barack Obama should attend Tavis Smiley's State of the Black Union this year. In his commentary, Martin states why it is not in Obama's best interest to attend such an event. Martin goes on to say that perhaps Obama should send his wife, Michelle, in his place.

So my question to you is should Obama attend the State of the Black Union event in New Orleans on Feb. 23 or will he be better serve to focus his attention on states like Ohio and Texas which are holding upcoming primaries?

  1. I read Roland's commentary and I must say that I totally agree with him on this one. I love Tavis, but I think the brother is wrong on this one. At this time there is no real reason for Obama to be in Louisiana. He has already won that state. His time is better spent focusing on Texas and Ohio.

Tavis needs to learn how to plan an event better. He could have held the SOBU the weekend before the La. primary. That way he would have been guaranteed the candidates would have shown up.

  2. I am beginning to think the Tavis is just a secret operative for the Clinton's. he is no different than this other cooning and shining negroes. Everyone who has been following the elections know that Obama needs to focus on the votes of Hispanics and lower-middle class income people. These people are the primary constituents of Ohio and Texas. So why on God's green earth would this man take time off from his campaign to go to the State of the Black Union?

  3. The last time I checked the Democratic candidates had a debate right before the South Carolina prmary in which they discussed nothing but black issues. If you didn't catch the brother then then that's your problem and not his.

His campaign is better served if they send him to Texas and Ohio and send his wife to SOBU.

  4. I don't think he should attend. he should send Michelle in his place. Trust me she is more than capable of battling Hillary.

  6. Boy, I must say that I am really disappointed in Tavis. I normally agree with this brother on a lot of things, but now his personal vendetta against Obama is just too much. Obama shouldn't attend the SOBU.

  7. At first I was thinking that Obama should attend the SOBU, but after I read Roland's commentary I quickly change my mind. Mr. Martin is correct in all his assessments. It would not be beneficial to Sen. Obama to attend the SOBU. He is better served going to Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

I have a deep respect for brother Tavis, but he is wrong this time. Hopefully the brother will wake up and see the bigger picture or find himself left in the darkness with no choir to preach to.
