Oprah joins Obama birthday celebration

CHICAGO (AFP) – Television talk show queen Oprah Winfrey was among the well-wishers for President Barack Obama's 49th birthday party on Wednesday.

Winfrey -- considered one of the most influential and wealthiest celebrities and a longtime Obama supporter -- joined other friends of the president for a three-hour dinner at a north side Chicago eatery.

Journalists traveling with the president said the party also included Gayle King, an editor for Winfrey's magazine "O" and longtime friends Eric Whittaker, Marty Nesbitt, and Valerie Jarrett.

The president smiled and waved to a crowd of about 75 people who had been waiting nearby for hours and cheered as he walked to an awaiting vehicle that took him to his home on Chicago's south side.

The president celebrated his birthday with friends, but without his family: First Lady Michelle Obama is in Spain with daughter Sasha, while the older of the two Obama girls, Malia, is at summer camp.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Chicago that Obama had received a phone call from his wife and Sasha in Spain, as well as one from Malia at camp, to wish him a happy birthday. source
