Wow, I read this article over at and I thought my head was going to explode.  'What the hell,' was the only thing that manage to leave my lips as I read things like this:

Susan Bloomstone and Lisa Reisler, co-creators of Booty Pop panties, a form of padded underwear used to give an illusion of a larger rear, said their product was inspired by ethnic women in Hollywood, such as entertainers Beyoncé Knowles and Jennifer Lopez.

"Magazines, music, and movies have really created a window for more ethnic women to be noticed for their features," Reisler said. These women, she said, have made the larger, rounder bottom sexy.

This Reisler person said it perfectly.  We get noticed for our features and that's it.  Black women have had bigger, rounder behinds since the beginning of time and yet the mainstream never embraced it.  It wasn't until J.Lo hit the scene that having a round behind became the 'it' thing.  That's because it's cool to have African features so long as you don't look African.  Angelina Jolie gets praised for her lips as if sistas haven't been sporting 'soup coolers' all these years.

But you see, that's just the thing.  We get praised for the body parts inherent to us as long as they are not connected to us.  Our full beauty is never appreciated just our features.  They basically pick and chose what it is about us that they like and then go to their doctor and ask him/her to duplicate it.

Don't get it twisted, the eurocentric aesthetic of beauty stills rule.  It's just been given a little 'ethnic' flavoring.

So what do you think?  Is 'ethnic' beauty the new 'it' factor or are we just being playe again?
