Kamari Charlton, Singapore, caning, Florida State

A former Florida State University football player faces the possibility of being beaten with a cane in Singapore.

Kamari Charlton was arrested in September when he tried to leave the city-state almost 200 days after his 90-day "social visit pass" expired.

But Charlton's lawyers said he was staying in Singapore while his wife received medical care for pregnancy complications.

If found guilty of overstaying his visa, Charlton would become the first U.S. citizen caned in Singapore in 16 years.

The last time an American citizen was punished by caning there was in 1994, when teenager Michael Fay was punished for vandalism.
