In September 2008, Virginia Davis hugs Lynn Hopkins of Decatur outside of the Georgia Department of Corrections in Jackson, Ga. after it was announced that her son's case will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.

SAVANNAH — Mourners are gathering for the funeral of the mother of Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis.

Virginia Davis' daughter said she died on Tuesday at the age of 65 of natural causes. Her funeral is being held Monday at a Savannah church.

Martina Correia said her mother took a nap and never woke up.

Troy Davis was sentenced to death for the 1989 slaying of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. His execution has been postponed three separate times amid concerns about his trial, but the U.S. Supreme Court in March rejected what could be Davis' final appeal.

Correia said her mother "died of a broken heart. I don't think my mother could have taken another execution date."
