(CNN) -- With 100% of the precincts counted, CNN projects Utah's incumbent Democrat Rep. Jim Matheson won re-election after besting Mia Love in a high-profile congressional race that captured national attention.

Matheson, no stranger to tough elections, is a six-term Democrat in a largely Republican district that includes Salt Lake City.

Love, a Mormon of Haitian descent, currently serves as mayor of Utah's Saratoga Springs. She was considered a rising star in the Republican Party, and spoke at the Republican National Convention in August. At one point, she rose to a double-digit lead in polls in one of the nation's most hotly contested races.

Both sides and outside parties collectively spent upwards of $10 million.

  1. I wouldn't be surprised to see more of these type of close votes in the upcoming future. Utah is becoming more diverse and soon the voting will reflect that.
