Elijah Miles is a recent Baltimore, Md. high school graduate and Teach for America intern who gave one of the most impassioned speeches about commuinty and giving back that I've heard in a long time. Not to be too dramatic, but this speech brought tears to my eyes. It brought tears to my eyes because this young man speaks for a lot of kids his age who thinks the same way he does, but we write them off because of the way they look, how they speak, or what neighborhood they come from.
Elijah Miles reminds me of my nephew De'Marcus who still is able to view the world through lenses that allows them to see the glass half full. These are young people who are full of hope and have a fire inside them that makes them want to do right by their community. They have yet to experience a world where, if you're not careful, all the hope can be beaten out of you.
Elijah, like the Dream Defenders in Florida, have the spirit of Harriet Tubman and Nat Turner burning inside of them and it makes me proud to see those spirits continue to live on. So many times we get caught up in the negativity of this generation that we forget that people like young Elijah exist. These are the individuals we should exalt.
This is a video that I think every teacher should play for their students as most begin to return to the classrooms.
I also want to say THANK YOU Elijah Miles for reminding me that the flame for justice stills burns even though there are times we cannot see the glow from the embers. God bless you young man and good luck at Morgan State University.
Please watch Elijah Miles speech and tell me what you think.
